RIVERSIDE COMMUNITY COLLEGE (RCC) AMERICAN IDIOT THEATRE REVIEW - Table To Stage

AM I AN IDIOT? …A CAPSULE REVIEW

Sometimes…ask my wife. Ha! (Where is this going?)

Passionate, raw, visceral – these are a few descriptors that come to mind as I immerse myself in this production of Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT. Billie Joe Armstrong is sitting right in my lap in the LANDIS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER at RIVERSIDE CITY COLLEGE throughout the experience (figuratively, of course).

Enjoying thoroughly the sights and sounds of this unusual theatre piece shaped under the musical mentorship of Lyndon Pugeda and the herculean, directorial effort of the always amazing Ashlee Espinosa, showcasing the talents of its student body on this stage.

As one of the professors in the Theatre Arts Department at RCC, she embraces an overwhelming task with this large cast of aspiring thespians and makes quite the statement, riffing with the foundations of educational theatre along the way.

Certainly not everyone will luxuriate in this stage adventure. For example, if a ton of “F Bombs” are likely to crawl under the skin of an audience member, then she should stay home and watch a DVD of THE SOUND OF MUSIC.  If, however, the theatregoer wants to rock out with this affecting music interpreted by a committed cast of young, talented performers, then he should consider a trip to Riverside.

Who knows? This special brand of idiocy could be your cup of tea as well if you choose to take a sip. “The Time Of Your Life” could be just around the corner.
