LET’S GET FREAKY!…A Capsule Review

As a former high school theatre teacher, I am overjoyed that there exists another Disney property that is aimed squarely at today’s high schoolers, Sure, there’ll probably be another movie version first, but eventually, maybe,  it will mosey on down to high school theatre land!

As a matter of fact, from the beginning Disney indicated that this show was not aimed at Broadway; instead, amateur licensing figures in the master plan. Director Christopher Ashley, Artistic Director of LA JOLLA PLAYHOUSE, signs on to direct the piece, knowing full well that the title would not be in lights in New York City (NYC) (as was the case with several other of his creative efforts). Undoubtedly, though, FREAKY FRIDAY deserves a great deal of love for what it accomplishes.

First and foremost, there’s a coherent book by Bridget Carpenter based on the novel by Mary Rodgers and the movies as well. Let’s not forget the bouncy and credible lyrics by Brian Yorkey and the tuneful music by his partner Tom Kitt. No matter the subject, this composing team is the “real McCoy” (yes, it’s a dated reference, but I happen to like it).  NEXT TO NORMAL in one breath and FREAKY FRIDAY in another? You betcha!

The fun storyline of a mother and daughter switching bodies leads to any number of complications. The creatives have a chance to focus on teen issues like self-concept and female empowerment. And the commentary hits the mark, too!

The show brandishes an exuberance here, there and everywhere. Young, professional thespians have a field day.  For example, how often does a budding actor have a chance to do tricks on his skateboard in front of a large audience? The evolving major, talented performers surround an outstanding “mother” at the core of this play: Heidi Blickenstaff. As usual, she wins the day! And local standout Katie Banville brightens the cast as well.

An “A” on your report card, Mr. Ashley! You deserve the “LIFE OF RILEY” for a job well done. (I’ll bet you’re too young for that one, too.)
