ROYAL PRINCESS CRUISE ONBOARD COLORS OF THE WORLD THEATRE REVIEW - Table To Stage

CAN YOU FEEL IT?

It would surprise me if you did. Surprises are the most obvious missing ingredient of COLORS OF THE WORLD, a Princess Cruise entertainment playing in the Princess Theatre aboard the Royal Princess during our cruise to Alaska. Actually this reviewer has seen the show with different performers on several occasions in the past and it’s perplexing that the show is still in the repertory.

Who can argue with the main premise though? There is so much xenophobia rampant in our nation these days that it certainly must be considered healthy to explore why we need to get along no matter the culture. That’s why it’s so disappointing that there is such a surface treatment of the issues. From the opening strains of “Can You Feel It?“, the original song with insipid lyrics that permeates the entertainment, it is clear that one cannot expect too much from this production.

Beginning with India and its Bollywood traditions even to the operatic aspirations of Italy, the emphasis centers on recognizable jukebox tunes along with some kickass dancing. In fact, the hoofers are the superstars of the evening performing for the audience. Undoubtedly, the dancers must love this show because they have the opportunity to demonstrate their joyful expression in so many varied genres including tango, contemporary, folk, ballet, etc.

Along the way the worldwide trek includes Pacific Islands, Japan, New York. Greece and Brazil (missing was any reference to the entire African continent???). Tunes with colorific elements are everywhere present (think “Over The Rainbow“). Also “Zorba the Greek“, Billy Joel‘s “New York“, Il Divo, “Be a Hero” and even “Girl from Ipanema” – a real hodge-podge! A well sung entertainment by the way.

Choreography manages to be largely beyond reproach from beginning to end. (The “Zorbasegment with a small male ensemble is a particular highlight!). Scenic embellishments are always interesting, the lighting is right on the mark and the costumes sparkle consistently (I love the warriors and the dragon, too!).

Unfortunately, no live musicians to animate the proceedings. No smiley face here.

If one starts with the obvious intended premise, this presentation could have been so much more. Oh well…I suppose all will have to settle for a typical cruise show with above par vocal prowess and spectacular dancing! “Can you feel it?
