THE HINDENBURG ON BROADWAY INSIDER MUSINGS - Table To Stage

HELICOPTERS?  KING KONG?

As I read the publicity about KING KONG set to open at the LYRIC THEATRE on Broadway soon, I began to reflect on other massive scenic challenges. Hmmm. The obvious one, of course, is the helicopter from MISS SAIGON.

Now onward to the dirigible airship in question. One of the photos included with this post identifies Capt. Max Pruss. As my father explained it when he pointed to the grave marker in Allentown, PA, he is an ancestor from the German roots of my family tree. Further investigation determines that he was the captain of the “Hindenburg” which famously crashed in 1937 in Lakehurst, NJ (“Oh, the humanity…”). He survived the debacle as it turns out.

Why can’t some enterprising playwright pen a script involving this remarkable story of the “HINDENBURG” with its human component front and center? Then I could be invited to a Broadway “Opening Night”. Tuxedo ready for sure!
